"Got Mariachi" - the Girlfriend's Response

Ok, since Damon has decided to make MY life public, via his website - well, I might as well take advantage and give my two cents worth.

My opinions are as follows:

He is crazy. I did nothing more than enjoy the music at Araceli's wedding and next thing you know, Damon is ordering Jimenez music and listening to my Luis Miguel CD's.

I think he learned something. Yeah, he was talking smack that first week, "Mariachi is so basic and simple compared to my skill level… blah, blah…" Yeah, well then why were you up at 3 am practicing? Just because it's originally the music of campesinos and 'drunk Mexicans' doesn't mean there aren't others who can take you down, Boy. Good life lesson, if you ask me.

His voice is better than he thinks. Ok, so he isn't the Fourth Tenor, but I have heard a lot worse in many church choirs. I have not listened to any of the rehearsals (didn't want to ruin the final moment) but I can attest that he can sing and dogs do not howl, glass does not break.

He outdid himself with this surprise. I knew he was working on the project, but I did not expect a whole mariachi band to accompany him. When he said he was unsure he could pull this off, I said to get back up. As in, friends who play music.

Ok, that's all I care to comment on publicly. Thanks, D.

"Why in the heck did I do this?" - the Boyfriend's Response

Why in the heck did I put myself through one of my most ambitious musical endeavors to date? I will answer this question with three explanations while maintaining a sense of privacy between my novia and myself.

1. Inspiration strikes the artist at any given time without warning or logical reason. Watching that Mariachi group perform at my friend's Celi's wedding, not to mention the look of excitement my girlfriend had on her face while they played, I thought why not try my hand at something totally foreign and unknown to myself? Artists' can relate to this explanation for we do as we please, and most of the time we cannot even explain what drives our own inner passions for our own distinct individual outputs other than the fact that we were compelled to do so at that first moment of inspiration.

2. Yes, I did it for the sheer vanity of the situation and for my own insatiable appetite to top any of my previous creative outpourings for my novia! How many people can say they had the courage to do what I did for any reason? Call it an ego trip, but a truly alive person constantly strives for a diversity in life without hesitation or apprehension. After spending weeks performing Mariachi music on my own, I knew I needed backup to create a convincing realistic demonstration of what I had learned in the past month, let alone a backdrop to mask my horrible singing! For a truly creative individual knows not their own unique limitations, because that person constantly challenges any obstacles in life and overcomes each success and failure that life provides as a hurdle with an inquisitive nature and an unrelenting sense of patience.

3. I will do anything to get a smile out of the ones that I care about, and I know my efforts to please others comes back to me in many different ways in actions seen or unseen. Sharing a world unknown to me, yet intimately personal to another, brings an increased awareness and an enhanced appreciation for that particular area of interest. Without being too personal, too late for that, you are always worth the extra mile Bonita, and thank you for opening my eyes to yet another genre previously unknown to me.
