OUTTAKES
Somber-
After realizing that I was never going
to make a CD of complete music anytime soon,
I ceased to compose anything. College has
consumed me entirely, leaving very little
time left to pursue the arts. During spring
break while releasing a revision of this website,
I knew new music was desperately needed. Cosmetic
touch ups on the same old material would certainly
become jaded and unwelcome. Hence, "Somber"
became my first attempt at recording something
new that was not spontaneous or one take.
I wanted something labored and meticulous,
yet with only a week, the piece is only three
minutes long. After releasing the theme on
the web and announcing it to my friends, the
feedback was not positive. Few bothered to
comment, or others thought it was too soft.
Being a ballad, it was supposed to be soft!
Although it has been removed from the server
once, it is here to stay. I love the open
notes and even though its direction is not
always clear, my intentions of a softer piece
were satisfied.
Oriental-
In a sense of being foreign or unusual. Using
the KORG multi-effects board, I came across
a unique sound called "Shift." Subsequently,
I learned that the sound was extremely interesting
to the ear and went about to record something
using the bass and treble strings simultaneously.
Bohemian in its approach, it has a startling
finale that shows off my skills in playing
fast scales. The merit in this piece is the
playing, not the ideas. Being it was an out-take,
I will definitely improve upon the hook in
future revisions.
Oriental
II- Which is what I attempted to do in
"Oriental II," expand on the original
theme. Using the same approach and effects
in the first one, this time around the hooks
were not as friendly to the listener. Always
when one tries to out do oneself, the results
are overblown and bloated. More varied playing
and more scales galore, this time around I
threw in some chords. Some comment I finally
have a rock appeal.
Cheesy
Rock- Trying to demonstrate that I know
rock chords and notes, this one minute number
came out. Being that, some criticize I play
too old-fashioned and I wanted to dispel that
myth. I enjoy rock n' roll immensely, it was
the first music that compelled me to play
guitar.
Electric
Theme- More rock n' roll chords and leads.
Starts off with chord changes drowned in chorus,
then takes a wild turn into me experimenting
with a delay petal. Slowly, I am beginning
to learn how to use the effects an electric
guitar can provide.
Mondo
II- Just me toying around with the fuzz
effects. Some dexterous guitar work here,
but inconsistently, and in other places down
right awful. If you do not like distorted
guitar, skip this one.
