Finally it is over. The surprise to Ana and the whole world was that the entire time instead of recording Mariachi tunes for everyone to enjoy, I took this project to a higher level. I hired a professional mariachi band to back me up for two songs to Ana's surprise. While this might not be an extrodinary feat, the catch was that I spent a week memorizing a song to sing and play for Ana. Next week, I will have pictures of this bold event, thank god she did not leave me, and it is official I am on VACATION until christmas. Those that have listened to my other music projects all I can say is to be patient and remember that one day it will be completed.

The zero hour is upon me! Last minute rehearsal!

Without letting the cat out of the bag, this project has an entirely new direction. Be sure to check out the site next week for the complete update.

Recorded an acceptable guitar track to "Ella." Only if I can get the words down!

Finally recorded a decent version of "El Rey." What is holding this project back is my inapt bass playing and the lack of knowledge of the Spanish language.

My truck decided to die instead of me getting a jump on this project! Spent the morning working on it, yet it is done, now I can focus on the project this afternoon!

working on the car! Die TRUCK!

07/31/02- NOON

The pictures say it all, this project is driving me nuts! But at least, I thought I would give my latest project a south of the border flavor. The old guitar page standard did not do this page justice. Wish me luck as I continue on my quest to complete this session.

Chord Changes? Notes? Sing in Spanish? no way!

I finally recorded an acceptable rhythm section to "EL REY." Unfortunately, I play the tune to fast! So tomorrow I will re-record this tune with an added bass guitar.

Been gathering supplies and support from numerous friends. Recorded a horrible rendition of Jimenez's "Ella." Working out the bugs on my audio software, but it should be completed in ten more days, with the option of another week if I need more time.

Screw the textbooks, that is what teachers are for when learning new and exciting things. My father happens to know the song that I am currently learning and taught me the solo part for guitar today. It was very exciting to say the least. The only comment my father has for me is that "the things you do when you are in love!"

Someone needs to get a life because I have a new recording done over my lunch break from work. This one is all chords to show that I am indeed learning how to play Mariachi music.

Last night Ana introduced me to her collection of Mariachi tunes in an effort to educate this hapless vato when it comes to dealing with his roots. This morning while on the way to college, I decided to listen to Al Dimeolia's Splendido Hotel. Coming home from college, I recorded the traditional Mariachi chord changes, except that, I added a few Damon leads and flurries to break up the monotony.

My Father is a genius! His contribution to me learning this music has been overwhelming. Today I have samples of my practice sessions. People sure are going to laugh at these weak attempts. It's me playing along with Jimenez's El Rey. Warning: I suck at this!

First day of practice with my Father. He was concerned about the transposing of the chords as the books had done, he claims they are wrong. He taught me how to do the traditional Hispanic strum, that is, hit the first two bass strings in a particular way, which he claims as the heart of the Mariachi rhythm. I am slowly getting the chord changes to a Luis Miguel song, sorry Ana it is a surprise as to which one. I am having my Uncle James re-string my classical guitar for that Jimenez tune, that man has some very interesting chord changes. It's amazing what can be done with three chords and Jimenez takes advantage of this very point. My father wants to know why am I learning drinking music?
