The Ka, or spiritual double of a person, must have a place to return to from the Underworld for immortality. Pharaohs were the only ones allowed to live with the Gods and all others made tombs for their Ka to return to and inhibit forever. Within these tombs, or mastabas, the departed one had all the amenities of their former lives complete with food, treasures, and other luxuries. It was paramount that the Ka had a place to return to daily in the real world, if not, the soul would be lost and the loved one would be unable to live forever. Hence, tombs were constructed to house the decreased for immortality.
